People volunteer for different reasons. Action-oriented people enjoy the excitement and adrenaline rush that emergency services offer. Some see the volunteer fire service as an alternative to ‘driving a desk by day’ – by allowing them to ‘drive a fire truck at night!’

Many like the feeling they get when they help people in their time of need, while some feel an obligation to serve their community. Others, want to belong to the team. Whatever motivates you to volunteer – everyone gains the self-satisfaction of being at their best when others are dealing with what is often the worst that life has to offer.

We realize that firefighting is not for everyone, but we believe that volunteering can be. There is plenty of work to be done on or behind the scene – including supporting the frontlines.

The personal rewards and satisfaction received from what we do are often beyond description. There is a sense of accomplishment when you control a building fire, joy and elation when a child is born, compassion for accident victims, and fulfillment from teaching fire safety.

The bottom line in our business is measured by the loss of life, pain, and suffering, and the property damage we have prevented and reduced.

Here’s What To Expect

Your community and fellow firefighters will rely on you to provide high-quality service no matter the situation. It’s an expectation that the highest level of commitment and training be at the forefront of all volunteers regardless of age, experience, position, or education.

Additionally, supplemental training is always stressed because we believe it raises the standards and provides the highest level of service and protection. We offer this through both classroom and online methods.

More About Training & Education

Becoming a full member of Monrovia Volunteer Fire Rescue is an aggressive process. Anyone wishing to become a firefighter will have to complete several essential types of training:

  • Department Orientation
  • Blood-borne Pathogens Training
  • Fire Dept. & Apparatus Familiarization
  • Pitcrew CPR

Once successful completion of these training modules, you will be enrolled in further training that is required for the frontlines:

  • Firefighter 1 Course
  • Emergency Medical Technician

Additional Training Includes:

  • Weekly Department Trainings
  • Firefighter 2 Course
  • Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC)
  • Pump Operations

Here's How It Works...

The process to become a member can be rigorous but is also rewarding. Those who are patient, diligent, and vigilant in their learning will get a satisfaction that only a few have experienced in their lifetime. As the saying goes, “Firefighting is a calling.”

  • Application Process
  • You should expect to submit an application, provide references and have a background check conducted. This process can take up to 30 days from the start. During this time, you are still expected to show up to training days as a show of good intent to move forward.
  • Candidacy
  • Once the membership has approved you, you will go through 180 days of observation mode, in which you will show up to calls and watch how MVFR operates, communicates, and coordinates. You will also be expected to show up for training and participate in events. This is a period in which YOU should be evaluating your commitment and ensuring this is a good fit for yourself.
  • Probation
  • After successful completion of your candidacy, the membership will vote if you should move forward. Probation is one year (including your candidacy time), in which the department evaluates you and if you are a good fit for the department. You are expected to meet a call percentage, complete task books, and participate in training and events.
  • Senior Member
  • If requirements have been met and the membership votes you to senior membership, you will be removed from probation and given voting rights and other senior membership perks.
